The Unit for Modelling of Climate and Biogeochemical Cycles of the University of Liège (ULg) develops the dynamic vegetation model CARAIB. Within MASC, this model will be adapted and coupled to the Aporia agent-based model to provide a Land Surface Dynamic module for the project. This module is aimed at projecting future changes in land use, land management, ecosystem structure and functioning, for the high-resolution version of the regional climate model ALARO and its externalized surface scheme SURFEX. CARAIB will be adapted for key tree and crop species, its crop module will be improved and validated for the Belgian case study thanks to the ecosystem data gathering and assembling, in collaboration with the Behavioural Biology unit and the Agrometeorology unit.

At RMI the regional climate model ALARO is been run with the surface scheme SURFEX over Western Europe with 20km horizontal resolution and over Belgium with 4km and 1km (offline mode) horizontal resolution. A coupler will be developed to transfer the outputs of the land surface dynamics module, including land use scenarios, to the surface scheme of the regional climate model.

The Department of Geography of the university of Namur is responsible for the "Land Surface Dynamics" work.
We are designing the Agent-Based Model representing the socio-economic activities (farming, urban sprawl, forestry, etc.), tightly connected to biophysical processes (plants growth, CO2 sequestration, run off , etc.), shaping the belgian landscape, which ultimately impact on the climate system.

The research group of Plant and Vegetation Ecology (PLECO) of the University of Antwerp improves the understanding of the impact of global changes on plants and ecosystems, at all different scales of organization. Experimental research and/or the development as well as the use of ecosystem models are used to answer specific research questions. In the MASC project, PLECO adds the knowledge of ecosystem functioning and provides the forest growth model ANAFORE. This mechanistic model simulates forest processes on their respective spatial and temporal scales. The model will be used to strengthen the development of the coupled agent based - dynamic vegetation model and to compare outcomes with it. Together with other partners, PLECO is also responsible for the gathering of the required ecosystem and land use data within the MASC project.

The Laboratory of Forest Management and Spatial Information Techniques is part of The department of Forest and Water Management at the faculty of Bioscience Engineering.  It specializes in Geographical Information Systems, Forest management planning and remote sensing image classification.
The tasks within the project consist of reviewing management practices and policy on forests, defining behaviour rules for the Agent-Based Model and assembling land use / land cover data and ecosystem data.
